Handmade Bracelets from Lisa Weir
Bracelets have been used for centuries to serve religious or spiritual interests more than any other form of jewellery. 5,000 years ago the Egyptians wore Scarab bracelets to represent rebirth and regeneration, in Jewish folk custom red string made from thin scarlet wool thread was worn on the left wrist of the wearer, knotted seven times, and then sanctified with Hebrew blessings, a practice copied by many celebrities today. In ancient Greece, red and white string was worn around the wrist to protect the wearer’s skin from the harmful effects of the sun.
Bracelets with Significance
Today, we continue to imbue bracelets with special significance: we collect charms for charm bracelets at significant stages in our lives, we exchange friendship bracelets to cement close relationships, we wear Shamballa bracelets to suggest the peace, enlightenment and tranquility associated with Buddhist culture, we wear rubber bands to identify with particular charity fundraisers, we wear sports ID bracelets, copper bracelets to aid rheumatoid arthritis. We don’t just wear our bracelets; we make a statement with them.
I like to bring a feminine yet urban twist to the contemporary bracelet. My beaded leather wrap bracelets draw inspiration from Native American Indian bead-weaving patterns which I like to fuse with a more feminine delicacy. My beaded Shamballa bracelets are a far cry from the crystal bling you see on the high street: I weave semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli, carnelian and garnets to create bracelets that feel beautiful and harmonious against your skin. The beads in my friendship bracelets are knotted into place bead by bead using the ancient technique of macramé. My semi-precious beaded bracelets combine the beauty of natural stone with added elements such as handmade silk tassels, Ohm charms, Hamsa Hand charms, Swarovski crystals and crosses.
