Handmade Necklaces from Lisa Weir Jewellery
Beads are the first objects ever created whose sole purpose was for adornment and necklaces are the earliest known form of jewellery. For thousands of years people have been stringing necklaces using shells, seeds and stones such as carnelian, garnet and lapis lazuli – materials I still use today! Shell beads have been found in Stone Age sites in Morocco Algeria, Israel and South Africa dating back 110,000 years. Francesco d’Errico of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in France explains: ‘The early invention of the personal ornament is one of the most fascinating cultural experiments in human history. The common element among such ornaments is that they transmit meaning to others. They convey an image of you that is not just your biological self.’ As a contemporary jewellery designer it’s nice to connect to that; to know that we are not so very different from our earliest ancestors.
Necklaces – Full of Meaning
Because we too imbue our jewellery with special meanings and stories: this was the necklace my husband gave me for our anniversary, I got this bracelet for my sister’s wedding, my mother owned this necklace. Jewellery has long been used to mark special life events: graduations, anniversaries, engagements, birthdays. Jewellery means more to us than other common accessories like shoes or hats. We keep our jewellery; we mind it. Our jewellery accompanies us on our life journey.
Lisa Weir Jewellery Necklaces
My necklaces come in a wide range of styles: intricate statement pieces that you can pair with a simple black dress to add twist to an old classic, delicate beaded chokers in a variety of semi-precious gemstones to wear every day, long ropes with rocks and chains to team with a classic black polo neck top. When it comes to necklaces I tend to agree with French model and fashion designer, Ines de la Fressange: “ It is true that in France, women put on less things. If they have a necklace, they don’t put on earrings; if they have nail polish, they don’t put on all their rings and all their bracelets.” So, my advice is to team bracelets with necklaces or if you do want earrings with your necklace keep them small and simple.
