Red Carnelian, Agate and Black Lava Stone Necklace

Red Carnelian, Agate and Black Lava Stone Necklace

A sumptuous rich necklace hand made using beautiful deep red carnelians and complementary gemstones. For this necklace I wanted to play with colour and texture. I love the deep glossy translucent red of the carnelian and wanted it to form the main statement in this piece. The frosted agate gemstones provide the perfect accompaniment: Little agate stones have been tumbled, much like stones on a beach, to create a matt effect that exposes the natural veins in the stones. Finally I added the kooky and charming black lava stones which have been formed from hardened volcanic rock.

I accented the whole piece with a tiny gold plated cross which lifts the gold seed beads that separate each bead. All in all it coheres into a beautifully simple but stunning statement necklace. Wear with a little bit of sass…

    Product Description

Red Carnelian, Agate and Black Lava Stone Necklace

A glassy, translucent stone, Carnelian is an orange-coloured variety of Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family. Its colour varies from pale pinkish-orange to a deep rusty brown, though it is most known for its brilliant orange and red-orange crystals. Its name comes from a Latin word meaning “flesh.” Carnelian is nowadays associated with the birthstone for July but it has a long history of uses amongst ancient peoples.

In antiquity, Carnelian was believed to help timid speakers become both eloquent and bold. [Simmons, 92] Ancient Warriors wore Carnelian around their neck for courage and physical power to conquer their enemies. In Egypt it was worn by master architects to show their rank of builder and the ancient Egyptians called Carnelian “the setting sun.” Alchemists of the Middle Ages used it as a boiling stone to activate the energy of other Chalcedonies. As the first stone in the breastplate of the High Priest, it signified the blood of the martyrs [Kunz, 303, 305], and was once believed to prevent illness and the Plague.[Fernie, 138]

Whatever about all of that I just think it’s an absolutely beautiful gemstone that’s a delight to wear. Measures 46cm or 18 inches long. Comes with lovely gift box and ribbon ready to gift or store.
